Read →The Author's Warning
Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.
BY ORDER OF THE AUTHOR PER G. G., CHIEF OF ORDNANCE.
Twain warns his readers off exactly the things a schoolbook trains them to hunt for: motive, moral, plot. This mock legal threat opens a novel that turns out to have all three in abundance, which is the joke, but it also frees the reader to take the book as a boy's voice telling what happened rather than a lesson to be decoded. The escalating punishments, from prosecution to shooting, keep the whole thing a tall tale before the story has even begun.
