Gregor's Transformation

One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections. The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked.

“What’s happened to me?” he thought. It wasn’t a dream.

Reading

Gregor's first thought is not terror but a mild, puzzled "What's happened to me?", the kind of question you might ask about a headache. His body has become something monstrous, an armored back and a belly divided into stiff sections and thin legs waving without purpose, yet he inspects it the way you would examine an unfamiliar room. That flat calm is more unsettling than any scream would be. And the refusal to let him off the hook, that it wasn't a dream, means he has to live inside this, not wake from it.
